Ashley trained at the Royal Ballet Lower and Upper Schools, and went on to join the Royal Ballet Company, being promoted to Principal Dancer in 1984. Ashley was Artistic Director Scottish Ballet 2002 - 2012. In 2012 he received an Honorary Doctorate of Dance, from the Royal Conservatoire of Scotland 2012
